When Should You Replace Your AC?
It can be hard to know when to replace equipment such as your air conditioner. Home Service Plus (HSP) is here to help you understand when you should stop repairing your equipment and how to select the best replacement for your home.
- Age: The average lifespan of a central air conditioner is between 15-20 years. If your AC unit is over 15 years old, don’t wait until it breaks to replace it.
- Inefficiency: If your cooling costs have risen but you haven’t changed the amount of AC you use, your AC is losing efficiency, and it could cost more to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. You could save money by upgrading to a new, more energy-efficient unit.
- Noise: Older units can be noisy. Consider upgrading to a newer, quieter unit.
- Repairs: If you’re repairing your AC more frequently and the costs of repairs continue to rise, it may make sense to simply replace it with a new unit.
- R22: Commonly known as Freon, is an older refrigerant type that is hard on the environment. By 2020, all production of R22 will stop, so costs to repair your R22 unit will increase and become more difficult to locate replacement refrigerant. If your home still runs on an R22 system, consider replacing your unit with a newer model.
- Temperature variation: Many homes do not have even temperatures throughout every room. The issue often stems from inefficient ductwork and a new central AC unit will not fix the problem. If you have a room that is uncomfortably hot in the summer, then a ductless AC unit is a good solution for you.
