What to consider when buying a new furnace?

Buying a furnace is an important decision - furnaces can last between 15 and 30 years, and are essential during the cold months of the year.

An installation company like Home Service Plus® (HSP) offers a free consultation to help you make the right decision for your home. Below are some of the things that are important to consider when looking for a new furnace.

Two types of furnaces: 80% efficient and 92%+ efficient

People need to consider what fuel source they currently have at their house. If you have a gas meter, then a gas furnace is the route to go.

Heat control

When it comes to controlling the heat your furnace puts out, there are three main types to consider: single stage, two-stage and modulating furnaces. Which type you choose can  affect your home’s comfort and noise level.

Single stage furnaces can best be thought of as “on or off.” When the furnace is on, the flame will operate at full heat, with no middle levels between on and off. It is the most cost-friendly unit to buy.

Two-stage furnaces are named due to their heat setting. Purchasing these can be more expensive than single stage furnaces, but provide greater comfort and lower noise levels. The furnace selects low or high fire depending upon outdoor temperature and automatically adjusts based on the conditions.

Modulating furnaces are the most efficient type of furnace. They allow for a more even heating than both single and two-stage furnaces, due to technology that allows the flame to decrease and increase in smaller increments, cutting down on temperature fluctuations that are more common with the other types of furnaces. Modulating furnaces are the most expensive in up-front costs, but provide the highest comfort and lowest noise levels.

Cost of a new furnace

Buying a furnace is an investment in the future of your home and your monthly spending. It’s important when purchasing a new furnace to balance the upfront cost with the savings in energy usage over time. It might be worth spending more on a high-quality furnace now, as a way to have a more efficient and less pricey energy bill in the future.

In HSP’s home state of Minnesota, winters can get especially cold. It’s important to invest in a furnace that heats your home effectively and efficiently.

  • 80% efficient - lower cost upfront, higher energy consumption.
  • 92%+ high efficient - higher cost upfront, lower energy consumption.

Each of these furnaces vent differently. Please check with your sales consultant to identify which unit would be best for your home.

Furnace size

Getting the right size furnace for your home is essential.

A furnace's size is related to its heat output, which is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). Check with your sales consultant who will look at multiple factors to determine the best size furnace unit for your home.

Where to buy a new furnace

Buying from a reputable company and having it installed can give you peace of mind and save you money in operating and repair costs in the future. Here are some things worth considering when choosing a sales and installation company.

Consultation

Getting professional advice when buying a new furnace can save you money and help you make the best decision.

Some questions to ask during consultation include:

  • What size furnace will be best?

  • Does the company offer maintenance plans?

  • Are there any rebates or incentives?

  • Who will do the installation, and are they furnace installation professionals?

  • What is the total cost after installation charges?

  • Does the company offer flexible financing options?

  • What warranty options are available?

Warranty

Because furnaces are an expensive investment, it’s critical to properly service and maintain your equipment. Make sure your furnace comes with a warranty from the manufacturer or the installation company. Check the terms and conditions carefully to make sure you will be covered should anything unexpected happen to the unit in the future.

At HSP we offer warranty at no extra cost.
